I know of a few friends that have done it, but it was a waste of their time. The reason for this was because the onboard ecu just recalibrates itself for the changes.

My friend holds a Mercedes-Benz center in Russia, Moscow and he had told me that for 1000 Euros they chip many Mercedes-Benz'es he told me that it gets more BHP's and sometimes even wastes less fuel...
So you are saying the X5 cant be chiped as the ECU will recalibrate its self back to defaults??? |

If you want more power, trade it in for a 4.8i.
I always wonder about people who buy the smaller engine and then try to get more juice out of it. It's like buying a 325i and trying to modify it so it will be as fast as a 335i or M3. Just save up and buy the bigger engine to begin with, especially if you know you're not going to be happy with the entry model. If you can't afford it just yet, then hold off until you can. Just my 2 cents...

$100 vs $15k!! not a difficult decision to make!!
but you're right! I wouldn't mess with a 3.0 engine... you want power get the 4.8... you also have to consider it will void your warranty.. and who knows what issues will pop up. not worth the effort!! make it look mean instead... the 3.0 is still a descent ride as is!!!
