My new X5 (UK) - Photos!

Hi all,

I thought I'd take a few photos of our new X5. Sorry the pictures aren't that good, but we are in the UK and I have been waiting for a 5 minute gap in the rain these past two weeks so I could run out and take a few pictures!

(The silver car seen in some of the pictures is our 530d SE)

Any questions, comments, requests for additional specific photos, just ask!

Inside view :

Centre console view :

(We're waiting for the phone bracket to arrive. You can see a 4Gb USB stick plugged in for MP3's, and also a 3.5mm jack in the Aux Input which runs off to the roof mounted DVD Player)

Top down view of 3rd row seats :

(This is a rubbish photo but gives some idea of the space. The booster seats are quite big and hang over the end of the seats. My 7 and 6 year olds can fit in here with _plenty_ of room. My 10 year old can fit in, but asks for the middle row to be moved forward a litte for extra knee room)

Space in boot with 3rd row :

Middle row :

(Note Alpine roof mounted DVD plater, I fitted this myself - cutting in to the headlining is always the scary party!)

Another view of the black roof lining plus DVD player :

The dash board :

Front view :

Top view from bedroom window! :

And that's it

How much did that roof mounted DVD player cost? I assume it's battery powered and not wired in?

The DVD player was £500;

http://www.dvbcaraudio.co.uk/product...oducts_id=2570

It is fully hard wired in. I ran power cables to the 12v cigarette outlet in the centre console, which powers up when the engine is on. I also ran audio cables to the aux-input in the centre console, so the sound comes through the stereo. It came with one set of IR headphones and I ordered an extra two sets aswell, so if we want music on, the kids can still watch DVDs and listen through headphones.

Sounds like a great installation. I just ordered my car last week and it is currently specced with the glass roof.....may have to change that.

Indeed, that's exactly the reason I didn't order a sunroof. The only factory install option for DVD player is at knee height on the centre console - no good at all for the 3rd row passengers.

I was torn between fitting four headrest screens and the roof mounted one - mainly because I was worried about cutting in to the roof lining (even though I've done it a couple of times before). But I must say, fitting a roof mounted screen is 10 times easier than fitting headrest screens, if a little more nerve racking. It is also much easier to get a professional looking finish - because basically the hole you have to cut to accomodate the mounting plate is much smaller than the DVD player itself, so you have quite a big margin of error for your cutting, knowing that your mistakes will be covered once the player is in place (unless you're _really_ way off with the cutting!).

All you need to do is make sure you cut your hole so that the plate will fit nicely on to the main cross section / beam that runs from one side of the roof to the other directly between the pillars between the front and back doors. The mounting plate screws on to this, well away from the roof itself so you can be sure you don't screw too far and puncture the outer panel. There is plenty of empty space above the roof lining to run the wires. The only slightly tricky part was getting the wires out from the edge above the door - it's just trial and error (I'm sure there is a better way), but it means you don't have to take the roof lining off at all which is what I wanted. Once you have the wires down the edge, it's just case of "tucking them in" behind the rubber seal between the roof lining and the side panels - they are surprisingly flexible and I had no problem at all runnings the wires all the way along the roof to the front window pillar, down the side, under the glove box, along the centre console and to the rear of the centre console. The wires are completely hidden and I did not have to remove any panels at all. Then all was left was to pop the cigarrete lighter plastic panel out (came out very easily, just pops out), then from inside I was able to push the side carpet panel away from the centre console (again, came off surprisinly easy), and I had my audio and power cables inside the centre console. I chopped the 12V cigarette lighter cable, fitted a small screw terminal block, reattached the cigarette lighter, and tapped in to the terminal block for the DVD player power. Then, from inside the centre console I drilled a small (approx 5mm) hole right in the back corner, and was able to feed the audio cables from under the console inside, where I connected a 3.5mm Jack and plugged the audio in to the aux-input. Inside the bottom of the centre console is a small rubber mat, this was put back in place after plugging the audio cable in, so it's almost hidden.

If anybody is interested, I could take a few more detailed photos of the install and highlight where abouts I've run the wires.

No problem - here are another couple with some of the seats tilted forward. My 7 year old daughter has plenty of leg room with the seat in front of her locked back in to position, and she is very tall for her age. My son (6 years old) is sitting next to her, but the seats infront of him are tilted forward for a good view (PS, as you can see, he is having to wear old torn trousers which are 3 inches too short because since buying the car we can no longer afford clothes for them).

I am still able to sit in the middle row infront of my daughter without my knees touching the drivers seat and with plenty of head room (I am 6'2").

Anybody who says there is not enough room in this car must be HUGE!!

you're a braver man than me cutting hole sin your brand new car! Sounds like a very neat installation. I really like the panoramic roof though so it's not an easy decision.
