ordered my X5 3.0sd + Iphone question

Have a question; LeMans posted this thread a while ago.

Of course, access to your iPhone via the vehicle controls and central information or radio display will only be available with BMW cars equipped with iPod/USB interface. The iPod/USB interface is available on 3 and 5 Series with 03/07 production, the X5 with 04/07 production and the 6 Series with 09/07 production date.

Maybe someone can help me out.
When the snap-in iPhone adapter comes in the beginning of '08, do I still need the USB connection, which I ordered separate. (Europe, option 6FL)

Here are my specs;
BMW X5 3.0sd (High Executive)
Saphire Black
Sport Package
21" styling 239
Black Nappa leather
Alu interior trim
Third row seats
Heated steering wheel
Keyless go
Comfort Seats
Rear camera
Panoramic rof
Bluetooth telephone
Hifi professional DSP
Electr. mirrors
USB audio
Navigation
PDC
Xenon
DVD changer
and few more option which are part of the High Exec. package
and Sport Package

Production is planned 4 th. week '08.
Of course I will post the pics as soon as I have her.

Thankx to you all.
I made some serious decisions after I red all you post.
Most of the time I even knew more then my dealer ?!?!

Thankx for your quick reply.
I mean; do you still need the USB audio option when iPod snap-in comes available. To play music with the iPhone. Or does MP3 goes with bluetooth as well ?

iPhone

The bluetooth function with iPhone works the same as other bluetooth supported devices (some phones and Phone/PDA's). If the vehicle has the bluetooth option, the electrical system is 'on' and a linked bluetooth device is in range (varies by device) it (the bluetooth device) is operable via the iDrive function.

The optional device specific adaptor is not required.

The use of the a specific device adaptor requires the installation of a special cradle device (installed in the armrest bin I think) which the adaptor snaps into. The device is then snapped into the adaptor. This allows you to change out adaptors when you change phones (provided the device is supported and BMW provides the device specific adaptor.

The advantage of using the cradle/adaptor is that your device is powered/recharged via the adaptor and the device is connected to the vehicle antenna array which may boost reception.

I think most folks just link their phone & go. I hardly ever remove mine from it's belt case. I just hop in & the phone is linked and available before I get backed out of my garage (ymmv.)

I am uncertain if the cradle/adaptor will support the iPhone music function. I am not sure if BMW supports the IPhone music function yet.

I do not believe that you can play music over the bluetooth link. The phone and music functions of the the iPhone are separate. To my knowledge Apple has never deployed bluetooth connectivity for any iPod device (and I doubt they ever will.....)

Good synopsis! Depending upon cell coverage where you live and how long you drive and talk, the cradle may not be of much help. I get 'full bars' on my BT signal from my iPhone in almost all situations with it sitting in the holster on my belt. (If you live in an area that doesn't have many cell towers, this might be a challenge, though). It is very convenient to be able to hop in and out of the car without having to remember to undock from a cradle. So for me, the only benefit I would get from the cradle would be that I could charge my iPhone while I drive (something I can do with the regular iPod adapter.) Given the amount of space that the snap-in require, I just don't see the benefit, but I may have different circumstances than most.

I use it. You get the "this device isn't compatible with iPhone" when you plug it in. It asks you if you want to put it in airplane mode, which then turns off the antenna of the phone, the wi-fi, and the EDGE network. If you DON'T put it in airplane mode, you will hear interference with the music when emails are downloaded or if the phone rings. But if you DO put it in airplane mode, (of course) you won't be able to use the iPhone as a communication device. Because of these issues, I most of the time use my other iPod for music and leave the iPhone on my belt.
