how much would/should you pay to swap mounted winter tires/wheels??? 'non' dealer ok?

i plan to order a full set of mounted tires/wheels for the winter. BMW seems to want a lot of money each season for putting them on the car... which i know is a relatively easy process that i just don't feel like doing myself. (maybe i should).

Some of the 'local tire stores' offer free winter tire changing and will put them on my car absolutely free. this makes me a little nervous... is there any specific knowledge needed on the new x5's?

I'm thinking of ordering the package from tirerack, which has the sensors and everything installed before shipping. anyone used this? do these sensors work properly for tire pressure monitoring?

To have my winter wheels mounted, I paid for half-hour of labor at my BMW dealer = $57. I bought the wheels from them so not sure if they will charge more next time but I don't think they will.

For my previous car, I bought my winter tires through TireRack. While the selection and price was good, I did not like having to deal with that particular tire shop (which wasn't even in my town) to have them mounted and dismounted every year.

i'm not talking about mounting the tire to the wheel. I have a full set of ALREADY mounted tires on wheels.... i just need them installed on the car. wondering what's a fair price to pay a dealer for that... or if it's easy enough for ANYONE to do.

I would just do it yourself - very easy to do - like changing a flat four times.
If you bring it somewhere I would just make sure that they use the right torque for the lugnuts - not a whole lot for them to screw up really.
I seem to remember NTB and Sullivan charging about $10/wheel for balance and swop.

Nothing, do it yourself.

You can use the ones in your stock wheels in most cases, just make sure you tell the the tire shop guys that you have TPM in your wheels, otherwise they'll just rip them out like regular valve stems and damage/break the sensors. After that just make sure they balance the tires with the sensors installed. Those are the only things you should worry about. Also tell them to hand torque the lug nuts otherwise it will be hard to take them off.

You would trust the actual tire changer to listen to request and to take this care? You must have different kind of people in the tire shops that you go to. I would not expect the guy writing up the work order to effectively communicate this message to the worker...

I could not agree more - this is asking for trouble.

If the OP is going to buy the complete assembly from TTR, they will come installed.

The hassle of remounting all this BS is simply not worth the time / money saved, we're talking about about $184 dollars installed from TTR for cripes sake!
