Post #7 is why I do it and from comparing the vehicles I see that change their oils every 3k and 6k, majority that I have compared and seen.....the engine runs smoother, a lot more quite, and overall last longer. From the dealership techs: Toyota, Chevrolet, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes Benz, etc. majority believes it should be sooner than stated in the manual. They obviously do not abide what the manual says, but just to end the conversation, like what post #9 says.....Feel meaning by what you believe is right what your manual/manufacturer says or like me, every 3k for conventional oil or 6k for synthetic.

Sure no problem, any useful information is always a positive thing. No need to laugh, I am not trying to humor anyone, just sharing information and my experience that I have dealt with hands on.

Basic article, imo; reads like it was written for AutoStlrServiceMag, ...
which leads to another "which oil/what interval?" arm wrestle here.

I agree with V: go read BobTheOilGuy, the 10 pages of "oil" on GOOG,
or hit the Search Tab here on this site; it's already been beaten to a
pulp.

I've driven 20,000 miles in a old chrysler minivan running on conventional oil before. It did not break down, although I do not know to what damage it caused if any, The engine lasted 300,000+ miles.

The 3,000 mile oil change campaign has pretty much been doctrined and is/was the standard. Either this was fabricated to milk more money from you or whatever, there are plenty of oil analysis info out there if you really care.

Either way oil needs to be changed. Manufactures have to recommend what interval you should change it or you can decide. For majority of car owners, they'll follow what is recommended although most people rarely change oil every 3,000k miles because they forgot, or its just inconvienient either way, as long as their car is still running, most do not care.

For those of us who challenge the recommendation, there is no point trying to prove it to those who follow it.

Ultimately I think following recommendations and changing oil between service intervals is for these reasons:

1) Those who payed alot of money for something often do what they can to protect their investment.

2) Just for "Peace of Mind"

I bought my X5 and would like it to last as long as possible and if changing the oil more often than recomended is the case, then to me it is worth it even though I don't necessarily belive in the 3000k mile standard, I definitely don't believe in the 15,000K mile standard recommended by BMW.

On cars that I have leased, I am carefree about maintainence. As long as the car is reliable, I don't care if the oil is like chocolate syrup because I know that after my lease is up, it is not my problem.

So just change your oil when you are comfortable doing so.
