i speced running boards as i thought the side of the X especially in black looked bland without them as the aluminium really complements the paint
It will also help with my other half as shes 5'3" !

Here's what Brian's talking about (hope the owner doesn't mind me borrowing the pic)...
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/5...ture002ap5.jpg It's definitely extended out more than other vehicles I've seen as standard. I never really felt it was a problem getting out myself though. Having actual boards there was pretty bad.

On the new build your own configurator, there's 2 options for running boards but I don't see a difference... one says aluminum running boards (in accessories) for $565 and there's also running boards (in options) for the $300 we're familiar with. I thought the $300 ones are the aluminum ones... ? When configured, the picture looked exactly the same.

The wear factor on the seats- Normally the average person will either turn towards the doors with their legs and "slide" out of the car. This will make the side of the leather seat very creased and eventually wear it out. Over time the seat will lose its shape.

The one for 565 is the accessories...in other words..to have them added after the fact. Hence...cheaper to order when vehicle is ordered. Same units...

Ok, your talking about the 'rocker panel' molding, and not 'running boards'...
I have 'running boards' on my '08 X5. I don't need them to get in and out of the vehicle, I'm 6'2". I have them for added protection from door dings from parking lots of supermarkets, mall, office, etc. They stick out far enough, where if someone was to open their door against the X5, they're more than likely to hit the running boards than the door. I pretty much get nerf bar/ running boards for all my trucks, SUV... just for that purpose alone. I think of them as bumpers for the doors.

It's interesting what you say about the value that you get from the running boards in terms of preventing door dings... I am still not that keen on the look of the running boards but now I'm wondering if I should get them...

I strongly suggest you make a conscious effert to step on the running boards to avoid rubbing against the seats as you come in and out. I always do after seeing what happened to my father's X5! After 3 years the side of the seat completely wore through and there is a hole in his leather because of the constant wear of his sliding in and out!
