Not all model will get this configuration. Especially not in Europe.

xDrive ... Perhaps X1 won't be AWD exclusive.

BMW also want to expose xDrive TM more , putting the badge on the vehicle. Same case with sDrive.

Engine displacement codes are becoming a bit irrelevant with the turbo tech.

How would you badge several models with same engine yet difererent power output?

Perhaps 330i, 330ii, 330iii

With all new niche models on the way BMW needed to rethink the engine + drive nomenclature.

All BMW SAV are equipped with xDrive. It is implied in the "X" of "X5" or "X3". So why does it need to be redundant?
And while "3.0" gave somewhat of a hint about the engine, what good does "30" do? It has nothing to do with the vehicle.
Scott answered most of it, but a couple of clarifications:
  • sDrive doesn't mean RWD; I would have said it means DPC, but Scott's definition is likely more precise. It is implied that not all RWD vehicles will have it
  • i generally means injection, not RWD. That isn't always true, but it is most of the time. It has nothing to do with RWD.
  • 30 certainly has something to do with the vehicle, it is the engine capacity in decilitres, before we get into the whole marketing approach of "add 5 for turbo" or "subtract 2 for derated"
I would have guessed what was coming, but Scott's hint of a RWD (or FWD) X, with only 2wd, is good news IMO.

1. Exactly my point, the average joe is going to have no idea what sDrive means. I didn't.

2. I meant that it is implied if there is just an "i" and no "x", it is RWD. I know "i" means injection, but it can also be used to determine rwd/awd, etc.

3. Engines are rarely rated in decilitires (not much is measured in decilitres) and it's obvious that they just removed the decimal. And as you stated it is not always the correct number.

AMG. And, with the AMG 65, they add a turbo to a 6.0 litre and added five to the model number. Seems familiar. There goes BMW playing catch up.

Infiniti.

This would be a good trivia question. Any others?
