I see the January Detroit show for the introduction, but is there a reference to when they are available for delivery?

They reference the tuning adjustments made for SCR emissions mods, but don't say just how far they had to go. Wonder how much of this engine is new beyond the software? They also don't note whether Europe will be getting the SCR version, or when, unless I missed it.

Interesting approach to the urea storage problem. Deciphering the translation a little, it appears that there is a primary tank (concentrated) of 17 litres, and an active tank of 6 litres, with a transfer pump and dosimeter. Because the urea freezes, the tanks and lines are heated so that they flow at low temperatures. When we heat tanks and lines for diesels in the north, we have to provide a 'black start' capability, not sure how this is accomplished with this arrangement.

RH71: I am not sure how many of these they really want to sell. I think BMW would be more comfortable with a limited population until they get more experience in North America in diesels, considering both the SCR system and dealer service capabilities.

The huge mileage bonus of diesel makes it well worth it. We should be able to get at least 500 miles out a tank on the sd.
That may very well be true for CA. But current prices here in NY...
$3.45/gal for 91 octane
$3.79/gal for diesel

using it's highest numbers for 12k miles a year:
3.0si @ 21mpg = $1973/yr
3.0sd @ 25mpg = $1819/yr

Not a significant difference. Extra torque is nice though.

Don't forget to add in the cost of the urea refill for the SCR diesels. Seems like it is a dealer service item, every oil change (assume 15,000 miles if the service intervals match the gasoline version).

Updated with new press release in English - BMW USA says they will include the cost of the urea during the 4 year free full maintenance. Not sure how that impacts other jurisdictions.

Nice post... I can't wait to get my hands on one. I am still waiting to see if there is any other news when Detroit auto show is on. I just think that the 6 cylinder petrol is kind of under power and the 8 cylinder is too gas consuming. If the 3.0 sd or the 6 cylinder twin turbo is coming to North America by 2009 model year, I think it's worth the wait...

Interesting motor, but the bennies are ethereal or emotional, imo:
Diesel where I live/drive is more expensive, & the MSRP and "mkt
adjustment", as Buffy&Biff rush for the new diesel car are bound
to be higher. I would guess it's another 100+ lbs in front...
and, JCL noted the urea refill, which Roundel guesstimated would
be "serious dough".

Glad they are finally bringing one, but it seems like a psuedo-eco
move to chase one, unless you are towing.

With 100 buck/bbl oil and climbing, we are all at the mercy of the
oil mkts. Will be interesting to see how these do, sell and run.
Thanks for primo skinny, LM!

Not to shift the focus, but need to ask - anyone with ideas how much faster a twin turbo petrol will be in comparison?
Based on figures on the bmw.co.uk site for the 3 series (available with all engines under discussion), about a half second faster with the gasoline 3.0 twin turbo, over the 35 diesel.

The diesel's acceleration figures will be hurt somewhat by the limited RPM, and the need to shift more frequently.

I hope they use the oil engineered by Castrol for BMW Diesels instead of the current crap they use in North America sold at the dealer. The oil matters so much more in diesel app's than even petrol engines. I'm guessing they will considering the other North American diesel's have switched to new oils as of 07 emissions.

Is there any/what will be the premium for these in the NA market?

did anyone pick up on this?

"The BMW X5 xDrive35d offers average fuel economy of at least 19/25 mpg (city/highway, provisional data).

My 05 4.4 on the original sticker said 16/22. Isn't 19/25 mpg less MPG than the Euro Diesel models?
