Welcome to reality! With a bigger engine & heavier body expect lower MPG.

I am getting approx 300 miles on a tank, in a mixed local/hwy driving (70% local / 30% hwy). It was much worse during the first 1000 miles, close to what has been reported in this thread.

It will get better, you need to let it break-in a bit and learn how to drive. I am watching instant MPG gauge, and see 20mpg on local driving if the road is flat.

On a recent trip upstate, I did 310 miles before a fill up, and could go for another 70 miles if not for the fear of not finding a gas station in the mountains on a weekend

Perhaps it's the 214 20's on your 3.0 along with it not being broken in?

From everything I've read from members so far, it seems the 3.0 should be seeing 16-17mpg.

IMHO, The trip computer (ie, the indicated mpg or L/100Km for Canada) is unreliable to use to determine the actual range and gas consumption.

The figures displayed in the dash board are calculated in real time not over the period of one full tank. So one may be traveling over 700km on one tank of gas, occasional peaks in gas consumption can throw the figure up becuase it only shows the rate 'as of now'.

I drove about 150 km on highway showing 730km range initially but as soon as i drove in the city the car gives me over 18L/100km gas consumption, which is about 470km range on one tank at that rate. but since I drove 150km on the highway already, that puts me over 600km range per tank.

Bottom line? Best way to find out how much gas one uses in his or her specific style of driving is to fill up the tank to full, reset the trip-meter to zero and let the gas run out. That way, one can determine exactly how much he or she travelled and how much gas was used for that exact distance.

hope that helps and please lets not panic.

I use this site to keep track of my mileage. You can even keep track of different vehicles. Very iphone friendly.

13.1 MPG on my 2002 M5. (Yikes)

Awaiting a new X5 for comparison.

I've been getting a range of 315 to 336 miles per tank over the 4500 miles I've put on my X5 4.8 in the 2.5 months I've had my 2008. Lately my average has shot up to 16.1mpg, but that's because I put 2400 highway miles on her at the end of December. This week (with mostly city driving) it has dropped back down to 16.0.

Thanks everyone for your posts. I will continue to monitor the rest of the tank & keep you posted.

I'm actually doing what one member recommended: I filled up the tank and and reset the trip meter to zero. And it's at this point that Im at about 115 miles nearing almost half a tank.

250 (city) to 430 (highway) miles range should be normal if mine is running normal. It's an 07 4.8i with sports package 20".
