HUD

Hey boyz and girls,

I test drove a 4.8 E70 yesterday, and I have some questions on the Head Up Display.
Is the brightness adjustable?
Is the location of the image somewhat adjustable, i.e. can you shift it a little higher or a little lower, or is it fixed?
What other info can be displayed besides speed? Is it customizable, i.e. can I display speed, rpm, and compass heading all at once?

And finally, have you folks found it to be more of a help or more of a distraction?

Thanks!

the only bmw i've driven with HUD is the 650i and i found it to be a distraction, probably since it was the first time i had ever used it.

my friends swear by it, and yes i am sure it can be customized, though wait for the people that actually have HUD to answer

my 2 cents

Speed and nav is what I have. You can have speed control too.

I really like the HUD. It is not a distraction at all. Not having to constantly look at he dashboard is great!

Yes both brightness and Height position are adjustable, but I have found that as you increase the brightness the background os the projectro screen also gets brighter.

Also I have changed the height up to the max, but I would like it to go more.

That all said the HUD is great, especially when you are using the NAV.

The HUD can also display "Check Control messages". See page 100 of the 2008 X5 User's guide http://www.xoutpost.com/pdf/e70/2008%20X5%20manual.pdf

HUD is awesome - order it and you'll be looking for it in your next vehicle you order!! If you ever do any driving out of USA...(like Canada) you can switch to KPH and it will show you speed in KM's vs Miles. Even better is as Brian mentioned, it shows you your Navigation instructions...which in itself if so cool as you don't need to take you eyes of the road. As for the distraction, I think once you've adjusted the position and brightness to your liking, your all set!

I have and I will stand by it till the day I die. I will have HUD on all my future cars (if available, and i believe other car makers will also offer them).

All are adjustable. No compass or rpm though.

Bright daylight is not a problem. It should never be a distraction because one should ALWAYS watch the speed while driving anyway. It is not IN YOUR FACE but it is much closer than the dash speedometer.

p.s. It is a proven technology used by the BMW Formula 1 team.

I have the HUD & find it very useful.

Displays Speed, Nav instructions with turn graphics (directional arrow), distance to the next turn & cruise control settings.

I thought it sounded like an expensive 'toy' until I experienced it on my test drive, liked it, ordered it on mine & want it on all my future vehicles.
