When cruising active steering is heavier to the feel than normal power steering.

I have had both in the new X5, active steer is more responsive but it is heavier. It is also dependent on what size wheels you have as well.

The X5 without Active Steering does feel a little twitchy at freeway speeds, so the extra weight from the AS probably makes for a more relaxing drive.

Made the same mistake when ordering my mum's E92 325i. Didnt get the AS and now the steering is very heavy.

Actually, today I was driving in heavy snow (Kitchener-Waterloo region in Ontario) and the steering felt just right. Heavy enough to give me control and light enough on corners. I just don't like how it does not turn back quickly to the original straight position if you turn it all the way to the right or left. My only complain about steering without AS.

I find myself steering into a turn and steering out again to stop it from turning too much. With other cars, I normally just turn in, and let the steering wheel turn back and just guide how fast it straightens out with my hands. The Bimmer requires input on both in and out of a turn.
