Auto liftgate questions

You are sitting in your X, playing with the iDrive, waiting for the significant other come out from a store, with hands full of bags... Here she comes, so you press the button on the console and open the gate goes. The significant other drops in the bags, and start walking towards the passenger door, forgetting to press the button to close the gate. As he/she gets in, you realized that now it is YOUR turn to get out and go back to close the gate...

My wife got used to our previous car, where I could both open and close the tailgate with the button on dash.

dude, when you see your significant other coming up with hands full of bags you're supposed to jump out and take them off her!! (at least I do)

and you want to make sure the bags are layed out correctly in the trunk so it doesn't block your rear view or become a missile if you brake suddenly... (things your significant may not keep in mind when off-loading)

i also like the idea of making sure the tailgate is completely locked and secure... (don't like leaving it to chance)

so, having to go out to confirm all this is well worth the effort!

I agree that this design is not an inconvenience at all. I have no problem having to hit a button on the liftgate to close it. In addition, I like the idea that I cannot now accidentally trap a small child or my dog in the liftgate since I have to check the surrounding area before closing it.

it's trivial to use a sensor system that prevents anything being hit or trapped by the door - walk into a merc showroom and check a GL

I know...but sometimes I don't like to trust all of these sensors. I feel better checking the situation myself.

It does have a sensor, and it is just too sensitive, so quite often I push the close button, run into the car (it rains), only to find out it did not close and I have to run out, look for the button (because the gate is opened just slightly at that point), press it again, make sure it closes, etc... Too much.

I have not had this problem yet.

i find this ironic because you can open/close an self closing trunk on a 7 series from inside the cabin. How is this any different?

Count on BMW to put a technology out there that they just haven't done enough R&D behind it. Just like iPod connection and Comfort Access.
