Navigation Drive on X5 2001 - Problems - Help!

I recently took my BMW X5 2001 in to be detailed. When I picked it up, the Nav screen was blank. It would occasionally flicker but looked "dead". An interesting symptom is that the radio stays on for about 3 mins, and then automatically shuts off.

I took it into the BMW service center and they indicated it would cost $3,600 to fix (which is probably about 1/5th of what the car is worth). I tried a number of alternatives, including purchasing the BMW GPS NAVIGATION MONITOR SCREEN online via ebay. I then to the car to two after-market sound/nav specialists to troubleshoot it and they have come to the conclusion that it is my Nav DRIVE is the problem.

I'm being told that the Navigation DVD drive costs over $2,000 from the dealer. I have no idea if that is really the problem or it could be something else, and/or if there is another way to address the problem. Also, if there is a reliable on-line vendor that could sell me the Nav Drive. I cannot understand how a DVD drive costs more than a few hundred bucks at the most.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to call me directy at 818-266-7675 if you have a more expedient, more cost-effective solution. I'm located in Los Angeles, CA.

You will have better luck posting this in the E53 forum since you have a pre-2007 model. I hope your problem gets resolved soon.
