Remote Control for rear Entertainment System
I picked up my new x5 with the RES a few weeks ago, but the dealer said that they could not find the remote control for it, but he ad ordered a replacement etc - all fine. He rang me today to say it had come in so I dropped in when I was passing by and picked t up - but I did't bother to test it, it's only a DVD player remote control after all. When I got home I got a DVD to give it a try, but guess what - it does nt work. The red light at the top flashes when I press abutton, but nothing happens, I cant navigate through the menu's etc. I have tried two sets of batteries - no joy. Does anybody know if the reme control has to be programmed by the dealer, or activated on iDrive etc? (I feel silly asking, but I cant think of anything else) Thanks, Jason |

I have the EXACT same issue with my new X5 4.8i!! The SAV came with no remote to be found. The dealership ordered a remote, didn't test, and of course; it doesn't work.
Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks, Nick |

Hi Nick,
Sorry for not responding to your PM, I have not logged into X5 world in the last few days. Anyway, did I get the problem resolved? Yes and No! I have found out what the problem is but I have not had a chance to bring it back to the dealer to get it fixed yet. The DVD remote control works on a radio signal, not on Infra Red like a standard TV remote etc. The radio signal from the DVD remote is picked up by the Remote Central locking system (as if it's a standard key), which then transmits the DVD commands to the DVD system over the bus. Because of this a new remote control has to be "Learned" by the car, just as if you bought a new key for the car. You can find out more info about this in the folowing document; http://www.xoutpost.com/pdf/e70/07c_E...ertainment.pdf Page 10 states that "The commands entered using the remote control of the rear seat entertainment are transferred via the transmission frequency, which is also used for the radio remote control key function. The frequency used is dependent on the national variant and therefore relevant for coding. The commands are received by the FBD aerial and routed via the antenna amplifier with diversity module to the CAS3. The CAS3 converts the signals into K-CAN messages. The commands then reach the RSE control unit via the K-CAN." Page 21 goes on to state that "Teaching-in the remote control There is a test plan for teaching-in the remote control in the diagnostics under Rear Seat Entertainment. The test plan works through the following steps: • The entry of the current detected remote control for the rear seat entertainment is deleted in CAS3. • The remote control for the rear seat entertainment is taught in. • Successful teaching-in of the remote control is acknowledged by the automatic closing and opening of the central locking. Note: Remote controls are not interchangeable. Only the taught-in remote control is functional in the vehicle."My dealer has confirmed that this is all true and that I need to bring my E70 back to get re-programmed, but I have not had time yet. |

THANKS!!! I'm taking mine tomorrow
One other thing. I noticed in this PDF that IR headphones are suppsed to be included in the RSE package. Did your truck include the wireless headphones??? Please let me know. My dealer told me that headphones wren't included. I'm fast learning that my dealership doesn't know much about their products. I was also told that the RSE had no remote (when mine came without it). "I" had to show them that there were functions that could not be performed WITHOUT the remote. Let me know, and I'll make sure I have headphones on order on tomorrow as well. thanks for your help! --nick |

Hi Nick,
No, I didn't get headphones either. I think that they were included with the 2007 model (which the PDF relates to), but not the 2008. Perhaps somebody else could also confirm this. I was alos a bit shocked that you could not really control the RES without the remote. Yeah, you can insert a DVD and it will play automatically, and there are the Play/pause buttons on the RES, but you cant navigate DVD menus without the remote or select other video sources. |

Over here, headphones were not included in the 07 packet.
They aren't cheap either, but I would of thought if one orders the RES that these "optional" items would be included. Cheers,

YES, your 2008 X5 with the factory installed RSES should come with 2 IR headphones! I forget the name of this internal product manual on the X5, but my rep showed me where it lists headphones as "included" with the RSES. --Nick |

I remember the RES being cheaper now because the headphones were no longer included in 2008.
