Questions on SIRIUS Installation Fees
I purchased my 08 X5 without the SAT radio and wanted it installed. The local dealers quoted me $495 for the radio, $40 for the installation kit and $350 for installation. I went to a dealer an hour west and was able to purchase the parts at a 10% discount and they only charged me $109 for one hours worth of labor, which is what the BMW service manual indicates is the correct labor time. The total installation takes about an hour for bracket, radio and fiber optic jumpers and then the system software has to be updated/programed to recognize the SAT.
When I asked the local dealers why the $350 install fee, they told me 1 hour for install and 2 hours for programing. When I asked the dealer who installed my radio, why they do not charge labor time for programing, he told me that BMW reimburses them for any new accessory programing and that once the software update begins, there is little if no technician time required to baby sit the process.
So I am confused. Are my local dealers jerks and are ripping off thier clients, or did I just get lucky wiht the other dealer ???
