Just had a call from the dealer, they were supposed to take out a few things from my previous E70 that I handed back some months ago but they forgot. So they said they would buy the new light bulbs, matts, towbar etc. I gave them the black kidney grills so they would take out the silver ones in old E70, well they forgot that as well.

That's not so bad as the new SD comes with silver grills the same as the V8 anyway, well the phone call was to say they did not have any grills in stock to put in the new X5 and I replied it comes with silver, OH came the reply I better go and check.

As it stands I will be picking it up tomorrow afternoon and then up the beach with it Friday night to the house. So I am looking forward to getting back into my own car after 5 months.

The stats look good from down under. I just wonder what it will be if the US will be getting a different diesel. Which leads me to the question, What will be the difference?

My X5 E53 3.0d used 8.1ltr per 100klm ( it took 12,000k's for the diesel to loosen up) and I owned the X5 for 3 & a half years.

My new X5 3.0sd (twin turbo) which I pickup on Friday will be the same. It takes a good 12,000k's for these engines to run in. I push the X5 fairly hard so I am hoping with the twin turbo and the way I drive it should get down to around 8.5ltr per 100klm for combined City & Country driving at around the 12,000k mark. This diesel has nearly 600nm of torque.

The V8 X5 would be around 16-18ltr per 100klm combined city & country, a friend of mine has a V8 Toureg and on the same trip just in the country section only getting 14.3ltr per 100klm, so by the time you add the city leg in it would be up around 16-17ltr.

So you can see the diesel gets double the economy and has the same torque as the V8.





I think there is a good half a litre difference in the old E53 & the E70 models as the E70 is wider and a little heavier.

should be close I think, being that the main difference is the emission system, all of which is post-combustion. it can still affect performance but certainly shouldn't be changing consumption too much

Hi, The only difference I have come accross with X5 diesels is the level of nm (torque) that different Countries get.

For instance in New Zealand X5 E70 3.0d & 3.0sd puts out 20nm more than in Australia. England is the same, the reason is Australia is deemed sub-tropical and they are worried about heat. Also our diesel has 5 parts per million of sulphur, New Zealand has the same diesel as us but are not in the sub tropics.

So the chances are if a large part of the State's is clasified as sub tropics and your diesel in not rated at 1 part per million or better they will propable de-tune by 20nm. If your diesel is the right standard then they won't de-tune.

But history has shown that every revision of the BMW diesel engine comes out with more NM's, so by the time you get it may be pushing close to 630nm.

I would have purchased your sd iteration in a second but for now I will just do a 3 year lease to see what we get down the road. Maybe even a viable hybrid by then.

Or more likely, word of a hybrid to be released about 8-10 months after I need to replace this X...always a solution/perfect vehicle just over the horizon.

Does'nt that p**s you off. I hate that when you buy a new car the 6-8 months later they bring out an udgrade or a better spec vehicle.

I remember years ago with the E53 they wanted something like $3k for Nav then 12 months later became a standard option on the run out E53 models. I hate that when they start throw options in for free 12 months later, specially at the prices the charge here in Australia for a X5.
