Tailgate won't close when left open

Hello all,

I bought my wife a new X5 two weeks ago and just joined this forum to get some information. My experience from owning a Porsche 911 has been that when I want answers to questions I get more (and better) input from web forums then from my dealer's salesman or service department.

I have done a search and found a couple of posts describing the same problem I am experiencing. This is what is happening; when the tailgate is opened and left open for more them a few minutes (like the time interval of unloading groceries into the house) it will not close when the button on the tailgate is pushed. There is a clicking noise from within the tailgate, but that's it. The tailgate has to be closed manually.

My question is; have other had the same or similar experience? Has anyone had the problem diagnosed by a BMW service department?

Thank you for your input.

JFS

I had the same problem especially when I open the lower portion of the tailgate. You have to close the lower portion with some force and the auto close will work. (Well it worked for me ) Hope this helps.

I'll keep an eye on that! My recollection is that we have experienced the problem when the tailgate is opened, even thought he lower portion was not. Thanks.

My theory - overheating of the button on the tailgate due to its lighting. Once cools off, it works again.

There is also some problems with the wiring and control units for the back hatches. Mine was in the shop for three weeks before it got fixed. Search and you will find my thread on it...

Same here.. have to slam the bottom half a bit sometimes. If you never opened the bottom half, then it's time to bring it into to have them look at it.

i've noticed each time that if you leave it open for a long period of time it won't close automatically... the actual button has a bulb in it that stays lit while open and gets really hot...but once it cools off it will work again...

happens every time...

i haven't had BMW take a look at it yet but i'm starting to believe it was designed that way...(not sure why...)

i have an appt w/the dealer to install my new exhaust and will mention it to see what they say...
