Gas gauge malfunction

I've read about this problem on earlier models but not on the E70's. Today it happened to me after I filled up my 08 x5. Tank was 3/4 empty so filled up with 19 gallons of Chevron, drove away and gauge showed 1/2 full. I only have 2,500 miles on the car. Stopped, restarted and it was still at 1/2 full. Anyone else encountered this problem? Back to the dealer!

What does the range (miles left for tank) say?

Sounds like a faulty fuel level sensor in the fuel tank. If you're only at 2500 miles, it should be a warranty fix.

I remember this in my E46, although I didn't experience it myself. The replacement was a 'gold' contact sensor which is integrated in the fuel pump.

Just took the car out and drove about 5 miles, stopped. Range on car showed 224 (half of what it should be on the full tank it had). Left car and came back, started up and lo and behold, gas gauge now shows full tank, range, 424 miles. Hopefully this won't be one of those intermittent things. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. We'll see if it happens again.

Sometimes it takes time for the anti-slosh algorithm to subside. Did you key off the car completely when re-fueling? Sometimes, if ignition (where the car isn't started but in accessory run mode) the vehicle thinks that you are driving up or down hill (with the change in the fuel level) and doesn't instantly report out on what its seeing - this is the anti-slosh algorithm.

Yes, key out and in my pocket so it was totally off. Thanks.

Although unlikely, maybe your Chevron dealer had a bad pump. Your 19 gallons was only 5.

I had this happen once to me on my 07 X5 4.8 two weeks ago. The differerence this time was when comming out from the station I made a right turn and accelerated hard to get to traffic speed and because it is fun. The fuel guage showed 1/2 tank but over time the needle as well as the miles to empty readjusted to full. It took maybe 20 minutes.

I just figured the aggressive start messed up the float for a bit but it does work it's way back to normal.
