Well, the range calculator takes into consideration your recent driving style/conditions in addition to the actual amount of fuel left. I've had the low fuel light come on in the X3 at 1/8, even with 90km/50mi left on the range meter, in cases where I did a lot of freeway cruising.

I had a bad propensity to run the fuel until the 0 mark..........I confess that although I won't run the OBC range till 0, I like to stretch every tank of fuel. . So its no wonder why I hate that the 325i bongs at me incessantly as I approach the empty point.

"Bong!" *yellow fuel symbol on Check Control*
"Yes, I know. Shut up."
(3 min later.....)
"Bong!" *yellow fuel symbol on Check Control*
"Shut up"
(I park the 325i)
"Bong!" *yellow fuel symbol on Check Control*
I KNOW!!!

Plus, I noticed there's no more visual low fuel warning anymore, except with the Check Control. BMW must design the new Bimmers for dumb Americans who don't look at dash warning lights and need an acoustic warning and super-large picture. Like when you put the vehicle in N and don't pull the brake, it goes "Bong!" *vehicle not prevent from rolling*. Ok, I know that anyways because I put the selector in N............no need for the bong.

Ok rant over.

Dealer told me 4 gallons. However, it should be noted that this is the same dealer same guy that told me my 08 4.8i had no dipstick (which it does).

In an incredible display of poor planning and nailbiting miles out in the Nevada desert I ran mine 22 miles PAST "the zero miles" point; coming to a gas station and surviving to fight another day.

I thiink its 4 gallons for the X5 and 2 gallons for the 3 series from my observation.
The warning comes on at 4 gallons for the X5, and then at 2 gallons it remains a fixed warning.

Thanks, very helpful, so that means you can go about 26 miles. LOL.
