I've managed to get 21 mpg going 68mph for 38 miles... Some minor up & down hills, but almost never a flat road (for those who live in NJ it was rt 287s to rt 24e to rt 78w).

29mpg would be possible on a totally flat road at 45 mph!

highway driving, its possible, i go more than 730km on one tank. thats roughly 80 liters for 730km. A.K.A 11 L/100km. thats 26 imperial MPG or 21 MPG US gal. with the AC off and with max conservative driving, it is possible. (pure highway though)

I went 710km on one tank (approx 58 litres) in my mom's 325i. Resulting consumption was 8,16l/100km or about 28,8mpg. It was mixed as well with a slight bias towards highway. I think my conservative driving style, taken up a notch thesedays, is paying off with no real side effects.

Yesterady, I managed 25mpg (imperial) at 73 mph (avg speed) over 280 miles with air con. relatively flat, mostly highway but some (about 40 miles) in city at rush hour. Cruise control really helped. On my daily commute I get closer to 17 mpg (imp). It is great for cruising but with petrol at £3 a gallon, I use my Z4 for daily commuting (36 mpg city).

Now thats a point, on the 4.8 X5 I think it doesn't.. In fact its terrible.. It snatches violently when you hit resume for example.

Cruise only helps when you use it properly. Avoid hitting resume, because resume is usually fairly urgent. If you're in the mountains, don't use it either because it'll downshift earlier than needed and accelerate harder to maintain your preset speed.

However, if driving is fairly smooth and flat, cruise prevents you from using more throttle than needed.
