01 3.0 Tranny prob

I have a 01 3.0 X5 with a tranny problem. The X has 92000 kms on it. I was on the hwy doing about 100 kms an hour when the tranny went into the safe mode and the dash light came on, pulled over as fast as I could and I turned the engine off . Left it for a few minutes and I tried starting it again which it did but would not move forward or in reverse. I had tranny fluid on both front wheels and drivers side. Could the tranny be done ??????? How could I have fluid on the front wheels????? Any ideas?

Thanx for youe time
