tire pressure monitoring question

Hey all, I just got my new X5 yesterday and I'm still trying to figure everything out but one thing I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be a tire pressure system in place asides from just letting you know if there has been a 6psi change either way in pressure....Is there a reason that BMW doesn't allow you to view the actual psi of each tire through the monitoring system? I've had other luxury vehicles and all of them have given you this option....just curious

Thanks

I had a non-premium SUV that did this. I hope somebody can tell us how to find this or maybe it is part of one of the packages that most of us don't purchase.

According to the owners manual, that system doesn't monitor tire pressure, but the rolling circumference and therefore the rotation speed. If it is different than the other tires, it will let you know that something is wrong. Check page (92) of the manual.

I just bought an '08 on Sunday and experienced my first flat tire today. Thank god for the running flat system, but frustrating as it cost me 300.00.

so if you deflate a tire as a test, it won't alarm you unless you drive on it for a while?

It does automatically register the flat when you put your key in the ignition. You'll get the iDrive warning and the red "flat tire" icon.

I don't think the X5 still uses BMW's old flat tire monitoring system of tracking changes in rolling circumference. My 2005 545i used that system and it did not have the TPM valve stems on each wheel. Newer models now have the latter which should be able to tell the exact PSI of each tire, but BMW apparently chooses to not provide that info to the driver.

Many "lesser" makes (e.g. my Honda minivan) provide tire pressure readings.

Everything I have seen, including the owner's manual, says it is a direct pressure measurement system now in the U.S. Perhaps in other countries they still use the cheaper circumferencediferential montitoring system.

I believe it is now a legal requirment in the U.S., and that the old indirect systems do not meet the performance standards, e.g., if all four tires deflate an equal amount, current indirect systems will not detect it. NHTSA requires vehicles to be equipped with a system which can detect such uniform loss of pressure.

I thought the newer E70s have "in wheel" real time pressure monitoring,
but I could be mistaken, as I don't have the E70...

RealTime is the deal, but the "indirect method" was the "granny/soccerMom" compromise, and
the indirect method is still used in many models of many brands. The pressure loss trigger value,
while mandated on the low/less acute side, is also variable, if within the specs on pressure loss, per
make and model; some mfg's that use the indirect method use a "quicker/sooner" pressure loss than others.

Real Time TPMS has been std on Vettes for a long time...the runflat tire deal made it a req'd system.

I have an X5 07 that does, the book clearly quotes this as the system that is in use

On my X5 in the USA, I believe the TPM works as significant change in the pressure compare to the basis setting. When I picked up my X5 from the dealer, the tire pressure was at least 10 PSI higher than what was recommended in the manual. After I reduced the pressure, X5 showed the low tire pressure warning. So, I reset the setting which removed the warning message. I don't recall seeing any actual tire pressures.
