How to clean pop spill from the buttons

Hi All,

Yesterday I spilled some pop to the center console. Today I noticed that Programmable button #3 sticks in when I press and would not come out. I pressed a few more times and then it popped out. Apparently, the dry soda works as a glue around the button.

Do you have any suggestions to clean it? The gap around the button is really narrow so I don't know what I could stick there to clean. I do not want to disassemble the console to clean the button at all.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ucan

I'd spray some WD-40 on the button to help disolve the soda and to lubricate the button. I'd then wipe it off and maybe stick some folded paper into the gaps to absorb what you can.

I would recommend testing out wd40 in some inconspicous place first. It may dissolve the lettering on the buttons as well. I would just recommend using a little water spray. Water is the best solvent.

I wouldn't trust WD-40 on wood. Find something like goo gone.

Easy way to fix it and avoid the issue in the future
1) Get a LOT of the BMW interior cleaner. It may be a bit chintsy, but it is suprisingly effective. Use a Q-Tip
2) Don't drive around with sugary soda in the open

Thanks guy.

The main problem is how to get around the button. There's not much opening - a credit card hardly fits. So, Q-tip is out of the list. Trying tooth brush with soap water might work?

Go to an office suply store and buy a few sheets of the paper that is used to clean heet-fed scanners and such. Then cut into strips to gently insert in the gap, first using strips satuarated in something like WD40 (saturated, but not dripping), and finishing with dry ones.

3M has a kind of product that is used to clean electrical devices like PC board. I suggest you to use this. It dries out very quick and won't be harmful to the circuit inside.

WD40 can be very bad to the plastic and
wood panel. Also, if you spray water onto the button, even tiny amount of water inside could cause damage to the circuit.
