September 2008 US sales...

BMW sales tanked in September as did most others. One positive was the X-5 reported a 1 percent increase in sales over Sep 07. The only BMW model to do so. Yahhhh for the X-5! One analyst said BMW is on the wrong track making cars bigger, heavier, and less MPG. I guess this is a trend across the industry though so BMW is not alone.

That's just bizarre that of all BMW's fuel efficient models, the car that actually saw a sales increase is the heavy and relarively-gas guzzling suv. I mean, it's not like the E70 is still reaping the sales benefits of new model hype since it's been out for a year or two now.

Very easily explained for they dropped their pants on the X5 (lucky for us with Premium Credit + .9% financing, there were deals galore on the X5.

Ah I see... that does explain it. I had no idea they were making customers offers they couldn't refuse. No wonder the E9x M3 is also experiencing very good initial sales compared to the E46 despite the economy. Crazy low lease and finance rates not to mention availability of sedan and vert almost right off the bat on a brand new model.

That is part of it but other makes had good deals too and everyone tanked. The X-5 was one of just a few in the industry with a gain.

is that true though? in my opinion they keep making awesome new engines that provide excellent power and torque output figures and use less fuel than previous engines required to produce similar figures. plus they are working on a hybrid X5 and nitrogen fuel vehicles - they've been pimping that hydrogen 7 series in a big way.

well I think the analyst got at least 2 out of 3 right. they are making them bigger and heavier.
