X5 Purchase Advise - Purchase now or later

Hi everyone. Thanks in advance for your input/advice.

Doing my research on a possible X5 purchase. Currently have 335i and need more space for kids.

Is now the time to purchase or wait? Some 2008s still on the lot with deep discounts. 2009 still waiting for updated iDrive. Not even sure MY 2009 will see updated iDrive from other posts.

Is the old iDrive in the 2008 or 2009 "really" that bad?
Is the new iDrive version "really" improved and make the old iDrive obsolete?
Should I wait for MY 2010 when it appears that they will make other changes?

I appreciate your advice.

I think the new iDrive starts with March production.

No new I drive for 2009 is what I've been told by my dealer who got that from BMWNA. I went ahead and ordered an 09.

It really kind of depends on your situation and preferences. If you absolutely need to get one now you have the option of getting an 08 (though maybe not the way you want it equipped, color, etc) at a good discount or order an 09 the way you want (and probably still pay close to what an 08 is going for). As far as technology it depends if you are a tech guy or not. The new iDrive is supposed to be better and there have been some complaints about the current one. Also, there is a chance that BMW might do the mid life-cycle facelift on MY2010---nobody knows 100% about these things.

I just leased an 08, idrive is easy, just takes a couple of days to get used to. You can absolutely get an 08 for under invoice, and an 09 for probably $1k over. Those are insane prices for X5's.

The 08's are drying up. I just bought an 09 on Saturday. 1k over invoice and 0.9% financing for 60 months. I may have been able to get it at invoice if I pushed harder, but I'm happy with the price. I kept my money in the bank and put zero down. It's as close to interest free I have ever seen on a luxury vehicle and the discounts the dealers are offering are unheard of. Even in the unlikely chance things get better (meaning prices drop more) the cars are still a great deal now. If your waiting for the bottom you may miss it. Also I figure any changes in the car are going to be a holding point for price negotiation.

in my opinion if you aren't keeping it for a long time, the new idrive isn't a must. If you are, I would rather have those new capabilities by a long shot. Storable music, faster nav/response, sharper screen... yes please. We're talking living with the idrive for 10+ years here. The wait is a different story, tough choice right now. I'm glad I'm not in your shoes, sort of.

Thanks for all the advice. Good to hear some real users of the X5 and the old iDrive. The reviews are brutal.

I only keep a vehicle about 2-3 years, so would the old version be obsolete and impact resale? Would this be avoided if I lease?

Thanks all!

Did your dealer tell you when 09 production will end? Bet he does not know that.
