Inner lights are for daytime running lights.

We need a re-written manual on this one. Anyone care to summarize?
There was a thread from 3/2007 with a lighting system summary. I have used this thread on many occasions myself for reference. Thanks trueX5er!

I bet that for the European/non-US cars, the inner lights function as the "parking lamps". (Anyone from Europe or Australia want to verify this?)

it might not be the best reference but my 2004 E61 uses the 2 angel-eyes rings on one side as parking lights...
turn signal is not used, not even on reduced power

In UK, Xenons are NOT standard. If you get normal halogen lights then the inner light acts as main beam.

I have yet to be convinced on the cost/benefit of Xenons - I live in the countryside and use high beam a lot and halogens are just fine. I'm not going to pay for something I do not need.

Ah, correct. We use different terminology.

I meant when you turn the headlamp switch clockwise, one position. I guess this is called the dim-dip lamps? (In between off and low-beam position). I noticed while in Europe it turns both taillamps on and the inner lamps at reduced intensity.

yep, that's right...
probably because you can't use the Xenon lamps as park lights 'like-when-you're-parked-at-the-road-side'...

It would be massively easier if the US would just permit International standards. Then automakers wouldn't have to make seperate settings.

BMW seems to have even disabled the roadside parking lamps (when you just illuminate one side) on the new BMWs. I tried it on a 2008 3er and it didn't do anything.

Christiaan is an unknown quantity at this point
ok, after some research, that does work in the US version, you have (after you turn off engine and open the door) move the Blinker leverall the way, to the side you wish to illuminate... and bingooooo...
