^ actually I think it's very helpful when you're getting groceries out and the last batch your hands are full and you still need to close the trunk... push a button with a finger or pull the whole tailgate down with a closed fist?
 I go through it all the time with my kids' gear (sports)... of course it's useful, just like keyless lock/unlock. That said, I wouldn't go through the trouble to retrofit it.
