US News needs to stick to it's college list report--not a SUV list. How about on the X5 "not having much of off-road handling"--uh, hello, 99% of SUV owners never go off-road.

The X5 lost positions because of the reliability ratings (mediocre). The review says that those scores are based on three separate JD Power rankings. Blame JDP. They did like the power, handling, and safety. They found iDrive confusing (heard that before), the third row seat to be a token gesture (agreed) and the price to be too high (OK).

The X6 got the same overall score, but because of a higher performance score, and lower marks for exterior design.

Overall the X5 scores were based on 52 separate reviews. They are simply aggregating data that is already out there.

Well, it's sorta like killing the messenger.

US News did not test or drive the vehicles. Their ratings are simply a compilation of what the other magazines, newspapers, and reviewers rated the vehicles:

http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/methodology/

A higher reliability rating would have helped the X5, e.g., I am sure the parking brake problems didn't help the X5's score.

As with all reviews and ratings, one cannot just take the raw number as meaningful, but have to read the actual review. And the actual review of the X5 is rather accurate, e.g., it gets downgraded for the small third seat, less than stellar navigation system, the i-drive, and reliability. While they note the "X5 excels for its sporty handling. "

So it al depends on what's important to a particular individual, e.g., I think everyone can agree that the back-up camera on the X5 is exceedingly poor, but whether or not that's important to someone is an individual factor. In my case the camera's importance is zero and I have no interest in even having a third seat, making their numeric scores quite irrelevant.

I read another review on one of the big sites - I forget whether it was autos.com or cars.com... it basically got just a 3/5 from reviewers because of things like it being too stiff and too inefficient with gas... normal stuff you'd think BMW / SUV buyers expect already...

I do have a high IQ, but I am no genius! Been reading complaints about the I drive for a while now. I don't find it confusing, I navigate with it almost as fast as with my trackball mouse, and I think it's great!
I have only 2500 miles on my thing (never used the I drive before), and I almost don't need to look at the screen any more, to get to the info I want. I even get to my playlists in my IPod without looking at the screen, and doing 90mph.

Maybe I AM a genius?

what kills the x5 is Reliability 6.0 // thats for the 4.8 for sure.. the 3.0 has way more Reliability.. ((( x5 are by far not the most reliable ))

anyone notice they ranked the audi Q7 as the best exterior? What are they smoking? That thing's length (or perceived length) makes the whole wagon look craptastic to me. I'd rank the MDX higher too.
