Black Sapphire Color Differences on Two Front Wheel Panels?

Been meaning to ask all you good people here on X5World about this but my 2008 X5 3.0 in Sapphire Black when looking at the front of the car under bright sunlight, I see a difference in the shade of black from the hood versus the two body panels over the front tire area. It's not noticeable unless under direct sunlight and it's very faint. And it looks like the rest of the car matches the hood. Just the two front side panels are a different shade of black. Is it just my car or have others noticed this subtle shade of sapphire color difference?

Your not alone!

I have a 2008 Black Saphire 4.8 and when looking at the front of the car in direct sunlight I do notice a slight difference in the paint between the door panels and the front fenders. I asked a friend of mine about this who used to do automotive paint work and he claims that the same paint is used, but it looks different because of the way that the metallic base coat adheres to the different surface materials. The door panels on our cars are steel and the fenders are plastic. Its amazing to me that BMW has not picked up on this.

It doesn't bother me too much because it is hardly noticable, but still unacceptable on a $76,000 truck. Im tempted to show it to my dealer but I really don't want to deal with their BS. What do you plan to do about it?

I say sell it to me for 19K cause that's just unacceptable!

Kidding, Defib's is right...76K...paint should match.

Yeah I noticed it on my Black Sapphire before I took delivery and my first thought was that maybe the fender had been repainted. Then I realized that it was because the fenders were plastic. You'll notice the same effect on the small panel behind each of your rear wheels.

I've just learned to live with it but you would think they could come up with a way to make the paint match!

I too feel like BMW could have done a better quality control on the paint especially for a car that's $60-80K. I'm surprise that it's only Black Sapphire though. I wonder if other cars have the same problem. Don't think there's anything to do here unless all the Black Sapphire owners revolt and bring a case to BMW...

I'm just going to stop washing my car so I don't notice it
