2009 x5 for towing?

I'm thinking of getting a 2009 x5 3.0 and doing some light towing. a 17 foot boston whaler which weighs about 2000lbs loaded.

I like the luxury suv's for daily driving and then able to fish to...

Anyone tow with theirs? Is the towing package worth it from the dealer or get the aftermarket?

Towing

Hello,

This is what I tow. 22 ft. about 4k lbs. Does a great job. It's not a rocket while towing but I only do it 3-4 times a year.

My advise: don't consider anything except the BMW hitch.

Oh, mine is the 3.0.

Best of luck

Hi

The 3.0 will do nicely.

The BMW hitch is made by a company called Westfalia. This is the one that BMW fits:

WESTFALIA-Automotive GmbH|The automatic system

If you get it without a BMW sticker on it they are a lot cheaper and the exact same product.

Good luck.

I'm having mine installed at the dealer. I'm waiting for an email with the cost. I'll post the info when I get it. From my research, the BMW hitch installs somewhat differently from aftermarket hitches in that it has some additional supports. Also, my dealer gave me a mini lecture about the fact that any kind of electrical work done on the car by anyone but BMW would "void" the warranty. I know that is highly debatable, and I'm not trying to start any kind of discussion about that point, but I'm just going to go with them for installation. That way I won't have any kind of problems or liability later. According to BMW's printed instructions for the hitch install, it takes 2.5 hours. So that is what I expect them to charge.

You won't need one for your application, but there's another thread discussing brake controllers. It has a link to the instructions for the hitch installation.

The car didn't need any additional programming after the hitch was installed.
Trailer stabilisation, rear pdc disabling etc all works nicely.
