Tranny or fuel system problem?

My X5 (2008/11K) is on it's third fuel pump. I've posted the issue here before -- it died twice while driving. The second time they replaced the fuel pump, relay, control unit, and fuse. During the second tow, the left rear tire was damaged from dragging the car and the front parking sensors are not erratic.

So now I am paranoid about a third breakdown on a freeway (note my mental state before answering)

The X5 seems now to surge at times or not respond at others. Sometimes when I accelerate it takes off strong, other times I have to hit the throttle harder to get a response. This morning the tach ran up to 5K but the car didn't really accelerate hard.

This problem became more noticeable the last couple of days. I swear the same thing happened last time before the fuel pump died.

Is this just a normal thing with the car or do you folks think it's still having problems? I have contact BMW USA about it and my dealer is going to look at it again this week. The kicker is I am planning on taking it on a 4000 mile road trip in 10 days.
