Active Steering w/diesel? - Page 2

Good question . I just got my 35d. No active steering or option. The steering is heavy and nasty. I'm very disapponted. Why they don't offer it on d in the USA is a mystery. This is my only complaint right now. I suspect theywill offer it for 2010 ...

It's hard to work out how BMW thinks sometimes, we can get just about every option on our X5 diesel here in Australia, even the M-Sports with 20" wheels.

Yet every country in the world that gets X5's and other BMW's can get the smarphone intergration (6NF) option except Australia, its a $150 option. You can buy a iPhone here plus the BMW cradle but no 6NF and that option is unavailable across the whole BMW line.

It is strange that they build the X5 there in the States yet you cannot get 20" wheels or active steering on the diesel. It was bad enough that it took BMW nearly 9 years before they gave you a diesel X5 there!

BMW is lucky if they sell a petrol X5 here, not sure what the actual figures are but it would have to be 10 to 1 for the diesel model!

Talking to other forum members it seems once you chaps drive the 35d X5 your blown away a little at how well it actually performs!

Actually, I think I was a bit harsh when I wrote that. To be fair you only really notice it when parking at slow speed. Other than that, the steering is fine.

The adaptive steering comes into its own when you start running 20" plus wheels, makes parking alot easier, it is also speed sensitive!

Fact remains it takes away a lot of the feel at speed. Having had cars with and without it, I am happy to be without it now, but it is a personal preference..

I just came back from a +1000km trip on the autobhan in Germany and I can tell you that the feel at very high speed is just perfect. Actually much better than my Z4 3.0si. I have active steering and adaptive drive which in sport mode gives you a very sharp grip.
