"Issue Regarding Oil Level Reading" 09' X5

Hi everyone, basically the X5 is giving me some problems, the car from time to time states that the "oil level is below minimum," I've had the car no longer then 4 months and its been in the dealership for 1 month where there was a issue with the service engine light which they also found a problem with the car stating that the oil level is to high. So pretty much I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue, the first time it stayed in the dealership for a month I wasn’t really bothered by it but after that problems still kept on appearing regarding the oil level and now I’m getting frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome Rob,
The Search Tab pulled up a list of threads with same/similar problem;
give them a read. A month in the shop?! Maybe a lemon law deal.

Yea it took a month for them to some what get the problem fixed, when i brought the car in they asked if i added more oil but when they drained the oil out and added new oil if still read "oil high" so they had to take out the computer or something (dont have the service paper) and send it over to New York to try to fix the problem. I know my comment isn't going to help your issue, but I am floored that your 2009 BMW X5 was in the Service Dept. for a month, and you were "not really bothered by it". I mean, are you serious? I would be chewing tacks, and spitting nails! I am a big BMW fan, but I think a lot of BMW drivers just accept BMW electronic gremlins, because BMW makes such damned great engines & brakes. After driving near flawless Benzes, Audis and 2 Lexuses (I know, boring, boring)...it is NOT acceptable for a new BMW to sit in the Service Dept. for 1 month!!!

Deutsch100, my family is a really big bmw fan. The car actually belongs to my mom and dad, i drive a e60 m5 and a e46, and my brother drives a e92, so pretty much we love bmw lol. The reason why it didnt bothered me cuase they gave me a loner which in the back of my head meant i could rack up the miles and not worry about it. But for the x5 the problem is hard cuz when i shut off then engine the light doesnt show up anymore so that means its kinda hard to explain to bmw the problem but i did take a picture of the oil light so maybe that will help.. thanks everyone for the help.

I have the same problem. I think it's a bad sensor. I don't have a light, simply when I delve into the I Drive menu, into the oil measurement it will sometimes say fine, sometimes too high. I'm waiting until I see a TSB on this because I don't want to waste time with the whole drain it refill it drain it refill it nonsense.

Okay, so I’m looking over the paper work at basically this is what my service adviser told me word for word

"technician found oil level to high. Auth shop Forman. Duplication problem removed all oil from engine and found that oil level was correct. Checked wiring power and ground to the oil level sensor it was okay. Oil level reading still high. Summit puma case #21466883 they stated for me to remove insulation on harness and inspect wiring no problem found and sent message back to them and they found there is update software coming out in April but we could send them the DME for updating. removed DME and sent in for programming after receiving DME back installed and programmed it is working ok now oil level reading properly."

It’s not working properly and even tho the update is in April I did send it over so they could fix the problem. This suck right now. I'll keep this updated for those who might or do have this problem. Thanks again guys.

It seems BMW never learns from experience.

Back in 1985, when BMW came out with the K series motorcycle, they tried to use an electronic fuel level measuring sensor with no moving parts. It didn't work. After a year or two BMW completely gave up on the electronic method and retroactively fitted all the K bikes they sold with a traditional float/arm/variable resistor sensor.

Hey BMW, how about having the electronic oil level system on the vehicles and in the field a couple of year BEFORE removing the dipstick? You know, make sure it WORKS in real life before taking away the dipstick? I mean, you have dipsticks on the V-8 and the Diesel in the U.S., why couldn't you wait a couple of years to make sure the electronic system works before taking the dipstick away from the 3.0?
