auto trans "P"

Ok, I have a weird question. When you are driving and accidently hit the "p" button, does the car smart enough to know not to shift to park?

The reason i ask is my instinct for some reason, keeps wanting to hit the "P" with my thumb while shifting. I'm afraid one day I put the shifter in manual mode and accidently hitting the "p" while shifting and screw up my transmission. Or worst, get in a major accident on the freeway.

I brought this up with the bmw shuttle guy who took me in a 5 series. He said he made a mistake hitting the "P" one day while moving less then 1 mph and the 5 series did shift into park. Jerked the car right before he was going to hit his service manager (boss) in their parking lot. So he said he' not sure if moving at higher speed, the car's computer is smart enough.

Anyone?

It happens to me quite a bit when parking. Before coming to a full stop I hit the P on accident and the car just jerks and stops. I think the max is probably 5 MPH.

I'm not a fan of this shift control at all. That P button is just too easy to hit and the control can also be bumped into Neutral pretty easily.

Every time I go to a car wash I cringe as I see the workers try to figure out how to shift the thing.

no, it won't shift to P while the car is moving, and I always hope it will be a missile launcher for people driving slow in the passing lane...haha

Have a loaner 328i coupe right now and the shifter is too old school for me. I LOVE the new shifter. M/S mode on the 328i (any old style really) is just too stiff to shift gears with all the time.

Once I pressed it by mistake while driving fast and no problem nothing happened. But another time i pressed it by mistake while trying to park and the car was still rolling.... The car stopped immediately but the noise was so loud that I was certain i broke something but i guess i was very lucky..
