Mirror broken

Very common here in Santa Barbara, narrow streets, parking on both sides with really 1.5 lanes width on many streets. I'm very careful about this but got pinned in on a four lane street with a large flat bed with huge mirrors and had no where to go, lucky more damage wasn't done. Hit my passenger side mirror, mirror not broken and pretty minimal cosmetic damage but the support for the mirror glass support is broken and the glass moves around at will. Dealer said about $1000 for a complete new mirror. Haven't inquired with the ins. co about covering but wonder if my rates would go up possibly making it better to pay out of pocket. I wonder, if the mirror can be taken apart and fixed in some way. BMW with so many things only sells a complete assembly when a part of it could easily and cheaply be fixed. Has anyone taken the mirror apart and replaced parts internally? Appreciate the help, hate to pay that much for what probably is a cheap piece of plastic that is broken.

Jeff

Check realoem for the parts you need and you can also get an idea of their costs to replace.

My wife took out my e53 side mirror backing out of the garage. Took into dealer and they jsut fixed it for me under warranty. Didn't even ask me how it happened. I just told him my mirror won't work. Didn't tell them a reason why.
