With BMW, the AdBlue fluid is only for US models at this time. Expect to see it in Europe in coming years, as tighter emissions rules require more controls. North American regulators generally focus more on NOx emissions than Europe does.
It is the same fluid that Mercedes uses, essentially ammonia. It is injected into the exhaust, which includes a second catalyst (SCR). The ammonia reduces the NOx emissions.
