Universal Garage Door Opener

Hey guys
So I moved into my new apartment. Problem is, after having coded the garage door opener, it will not open the garage when I'm trying to enter the complex.
It will work from the inside, when I'm trying to leave the complex. This means it is coded correctly, but the signal is very weak.
To further add to the insult, my roommate drives the 2002 X5 and has NO ISSUES whatsoever going in and out with his garage door opener.
Is there anything I can do to strengthen the signal? Or is this garage door opener essentially an expensive piece of crap option?

most likely you need to have your homelink unit replaced then. Since it works fine for your roommate, that tell me the garage opener main unit is not the problem. It's the remote/homelink opener that has the issue. I live in a condo, my transmitter works just fine as I pull into the driveway.

When you programmed your homelink did the remote have fresh batteries? Try it again with fresh batteries.

How far away are you when you "enter the complex" that it won't reach the garage? I've tested my range turning the block (I'm a corner house) and you need to be no further than... I would say... 4-5 car lengths away - pretty much arriving at my driveway. I'm not sure if line-of-sight has to do with it as there's a fence barely in the way, but from what I can tell the range isn't great, but it does the job for me.

i think the homelink works off of the car battery. It only works whe the accessory/engine is on.

My ol' '01 works coming up our mtn road, before our driveway begins...
must be 75 yds minimum, fwiw. And, it isn't line of sight as we are
ascending a hill/turn, and the driveway slopes down to the garage,
"below" that slope.

At our FLA joint, in the flatlands, it works from the end of the block:
must be 200+ yds.

No, I mean batteries for the original remote that the homelink is learning from.

When I am trying to enter the garage, my nose is literally stuck to the gate. I turn on the parking sensors to get as close as possible, and it still will not open.

When I am inside the garage exiting, I have to be less than 1 car away from the garage gate.

When I am in front of the gf's apartment, I have to be less than 1/2 a car away from her gate to open.

Overall, the signal is very very weak.

Very weird. I was thinking it was an issue with your garage sensor until you mentioned that you have an issue with another gate as well. Perhaps you need to take it in for service and do a check.

I don't have a problem whatsoever with my e70. I can open the garage door while turning into my driveway (100 ft away) so I know it is capable of handling some distance.

Have you tried bringing your garage remote and comparing how far it will go compared to the e70?

Good suggestion. Sometimes odd angles will force the signal to pass through multiple walls, steel beams, or whatever, decreasing the effective range. If you find the handheld remote works fine at a distance, and the BMW Homelink system doesn't, I would take the car to the dealership for repair.
