Bump. Any news of retrofit of the controller? I've been using it in the loaners and really like the feel of it.

I am also interested in just the controller or the full upgrade.
I will check with my parts guy if the 2010 parts are available.

I can't imagine the full retrofit of the new iDrive would be cost effective, but certainly just the controller and the new center console piece would be worth it for me at $500.00. My dealer doesn't have the part number yet on the console piece or the controller yet.

The new buttons and feel of the knob are much better.

Just stopped by the dealers. They have the part number in the system (I didn't write it down). Ironically it was shown as a 2009 part (but for a 10/09 production X5) with the old controller next to it too. This makes sense cuz that was about when the 2010 with the new iDrive system went into production.

The parts guys didn't have any knowledge of whether this is possible. He asked the service guys who said that it was not compatible with the CIC, CEC or something like that I didn't catch. He's still looking into it.

Uhm.. shouldn't the controller be the same for the X5 as the M3?

I did this swap for my '08 M3 and it worked fine. For the M3's people found that the software had to updated to the latest version and you had to have the version that has the 6 buttons that you can preset. It was a little over $400 for the trim and controller but I like the way it works and it cuts out one step for many functions.

One issue may be that a couple of months ago BMW stopped letting dealers sell the controllers and the trim was hard to come by. I don't know if this has been resolved but you may have to check with several dealers.

So your 08 M3 now has the new controller with the older iDrive system with latest updated (6 button preset) older iDrive software.
