Question about resetting TPM with another set of rims

Hi,

I am getting a slightly used OEM 214 rim/tire set with TPM on it. When I swap with the 214 set with TPM. Do I need to bring the car into dealer to reset TPM or I can just reset it from iDrive by myself after they install the 214 set on the car? since it is not the same TPM set from my original 19" rim.

Thanks.

same TPMs are fine. Reset becomes available when your vehicle is still, it takes quite a while when you ask it to reset (5 mins or more).

It is not the same TPMs coming from my original 19" rims. It is another set of TPM coming form the 214s rims.... Do you think I can just reset if myself via iDrive?

Your car is programmed to your existing TPMs. If you are changing the TPMs, you'll need to program the car to communicate to the new TPMs. This can be done by the dealer, but I am afraid they'll charge you a lot.
Another option is to go to an independent tire shop and ask them to program the TPMs. Most of the good tire shops these days have the necessary hardware to do this. This is the cheapest and best option.

That's really.... Even with same OEM model TPM fomr another set of 214 rims but it cannot just reset it from iDrive? I just called one of my local installer wheel works but they have not idea how to program it...

But here is my another question for people who has two sets of rim/tire (TPM on each set) for swapping between summer and winter. How are they going to make the TPMs work on each set with the same car?

Thanks.

On my E60, I swap summer/winter tires and wheels twice each year. Each set of wheels has a set of TPMs in them (OE BMW). I have to reset the pressure on the iDrive, but I don't require any dealer reprogramming. Works fine.

I have two sets of wheels. The OEM 19's and OEM 239 21" wheels. Each set has their own TMPS sensors. All you have to do once you have swapped the wheels is to go into your iDrive menu under TMPS. You'll be given the option to reset the sensors, which requires you to drive a little. No need to go to the dealer for this.

I was wondering why it took so long while I was still. Maybe it's in the manual that I have to move but I don't think it was. I thought these things were direct sensors which didn't require rotational speed. How long does it take to reset while you're moving? I literally sat there for 5 mins or maybe more and just started heading home and eventually it finished.

I just switched my 19 in for the 214 style. Make sure the vehicle is not moving, reset via iDrive. Wait about a minute, it should stated resetting TPM, when you see that message, then start driving, the rest the system will do it
