My father ended up getting a beautiful 09 4.8i sport. He loves it, but has a question, and it will be great to get some feedback from those of you who own a similar car.
He finds that the transmission almost slips when accelerating off the line. We took it up to the dealer to see if he may need a software upgrade, but it seems hes up to date. I guess the transmission is automatically tuned to creep off the line in a higher gear, such as 3rd, to reduce "head jerking," and if you give it more gas it drops shifts to compensate. Has anyone heard of this and if so, it is true? It seems like a bunch of BS. My e53 jumps off the line with the slightest touch to the gas, his E70 needs a hard push to get it to feel the same. This is becoming an annoyance because he's burning so much gas while the tach is revving high. |

Have you tried it with the gear shifter pushed to the left for "Sport Mode?" Some people report that this makes the "off-the-line" performance smoother; however, it will have a negative impact on fuel MPG.

It seems the car has more technology than it knows what to do with. |

I think they are just taking the "Efficient Dynamics" bit a bit too far, compromising performance to get the last little bit, e.g., it looks like the battery problems some people have reported might be due to BMW's attempt for more efficiency by trying to charge only when the engine RPM is falling, or some such thing, e.g., if you charge mainly when decelerating, you get a very small effect similar to regenerative braking.

I'm sure it will take some getting used to, dad's bummed about it though. He loves the car, everything about it is gorgeous; Nappa leather everywhere. He'll just have to work on his acceleration game.

This lag has been written about here and elsewhere quite a bit, bantering between turbolag v. transmission starting in 2nd gear v. torque convertor problem v. alien mind control. It is real and not a misperception across BMW vehicle models. I have a 335i with the same problem but you essentially forget about it after 5000 miles or so. I was reminded of it again here and realized the lag is still there but I just got used to it for better or worse.
