I would have said an X1 if you were going new too, they will start at £24k (but only 2 wheel drive at that price point).
Having had an E70 X5 and still have an E83 X3 both in the UK, I'd say go for the X3 and try to get a post-facelift model. You'll get bent over on your Mini trade in though - so prepare yourself for that. Best idea is to test drive one of each and let your good lady decide which she prefers. The steering on the X3 is much heavier than on the E70 but I've never driven a E53. Like others have said, the off road capablities of both are similar, but neither are a Range/ Land Rover.
