New X5 owner - hi and a n00b question!

Hi, all -

Just picked up my X5 diesel a week ago, and it's awesome.

Question - is there a reference manual you folks recommend?

My first project for the X5 is installing a Flash2Pass garage door transmitter, and I'd like to find a wiring diagram for the headlight harness.

Thanks in advance - and I swear I will make liberal use of the search feature before asking questions about trailer hitches, draining batteries, or leatherette vs. cow.

By the way, both sides of the garage have now fallen to the Germans. This was the advance party; the X5 finished the job.

Welcome to Xoutpost.com!

Most posters recommend the Bentley manuals, but Benltey don't list a version for the E70 yet, just the E53 model (up through 2006).

In the Online Reference tab on the top of your screen there is a section on wiring diagrams, but it is limited to the E53 again.

In the Online Reference tab, under E70 PDFs, there are extensive excerpts from the E70 service manual, including sections on wiring.

All of this comes with a caution that tapping into any modern BMW wiring harness brings certain risks, given the bus technology that BMW uses. Forewarned is forearmed.

If you don't see the Online Reference tab (after Articles and How To's, before Gallery and FAQ) then you haven't paid your premier membership fees yet. They are well worth it. I have heard that some can't see these tabs, and I believe this is the reason why.

Again, welcome, and enjoy the new vehicles.

The diesel feels VERY fast. One of the reviews I read mentioned that it feels much faster than track times suggest, and I have to agree. It digs in and goes - the diesel torque is awesome.

Picked it up with 6 miles on the clock, and haven't been to the pump yet (just about 400 miles on it now, and a little under a quarter tank to go). For reference, I seldom see 20+ MPG from my Boxster - I'm not the most conservative driver (one afternoon at the track I managed to get 4 MPG from the Boxster) - so I'd rate the mileage so far somewhere between great and stunning.

I understand that the new iDrive is better than the old one, but I still read snarky reviews about the newer version too. Not sure what kind of technophobe is writing those reviews, but the controls seem logical and easy enough to me.

Last night I just learned about sending messages from Google Maps to the iDrive's message center - anyone else have some killer tips I need to know about?

Not a ton of options beyond nav, parking assist (non-camera), and the rear seat climate package. I went with leatherette, which I understand is a hot-button issue, and it works just fine as a butt / foam barrier.

Welcome and g'day from Down Under,
Nice looking X5 you got there.

Just curious about the dreaded diesel 'clack, tick, clack, tick' noise that I often hear when sitting next to an E53 diesel (here on the GC we have heaps of them) and was wandering do you also have that dreadful sound eminating from what is an otherwise stunning vehicle?? For mine, it seems to spoil it. But then again the fuel milage is prob worth every cent of that noise.

Any who,
Happy and safe motoring to you and family

to another SoCal member.

You've got a great combination in your garage, especially for San Diego weather.
