Unfortunately there is not much you can do. This is a LCD screen with backlighting (as all LCD's have) the display turns off, but the LCD remains "active" that's why you get the glow.

The screen would require a warm up if turned off completely, so instant-on alerts would be hindered. The only time I notice the "glow" is on really dark rural roads, and it's never distracting, just turn on your highbeams.
