I ran over a 2x4 on the road last night

Two actually, they were nailed together like a cross. Probably 6 inches long. I came out from behind a left lane hog, coming into a curve and there it was. I had no where to go, I tried to get it between my front wheels and drive over it but I didn't have enough room with a car to my left. It caught the inner side of my left front tire. I must have caught enough of it that the tire rode over it and didn't kick it back up. What a hit! Somehow my rear wheels cleared it. I braced myself and nothing happened.

I guess the stiff sidewalls saved me.

I thought for sure I'd have a blowout and a bent wheel.

Just saying...Whew.

Glad to hear you came out unscathed.

The wood probably spun towards the middle of the lane after you hit it with the front wheel allowing your back ones to clear it. If you were a guy you'd be claiming that was just how you planned it.

Now we know you can handle 6 inches of wood while driving.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Even though it seems that the 2x4 didn't hit anything but the tire, you might want to check the undersides of your X5. The engine/oil pan is pretty well protected by a thick aluminum panel. But it can be bent (don't ask how I know). Behind that panel the various bits and pieces are somewhat protected but largely by plastic covers. They look like they were meant to reduce turbulence more than protect the tranny, exhaust etc. form anything serious like a 2x4. It doesn't take much impact to pinch a hydraulic line etc.

Thanks. I didn't get under it but did take notice after she sat for any fluid leaks. I'll pass by the dealer tomorrow and have them take a quick look.

You might wanna check out the inner sides of your tires, i messed up my front wheel on my 4.8is

If your alignment seems ok then it's most likely not an issue.

If your have the stock wheel/tire combo, there is a good bit of compliance in the side wall to absorb this kind of blow, but Thirtyfive is right, you should have the underside checked for any ancillary damage.
