nope - never in 2.5 years. Shouldn't happen because the car should go automatically into park when you switch it off. At least mine does!

Me too. The car should automatically go into Park after turning the ignition off.

FWIW The X5 is our only vehicle with an automatic transmission. So we have a habit of always setting the hand/parking brake before we get out of any vehicle. Habits developed over 4+ decades die hard. Even the pitiful excuse for a hand/parking brake on an E70 is better than trusting the tranny to do the right thing

I thought it was a bit strange so we are taking it into the dealer for inspection/repairs. Thanks for the replies....it can be a very dangerous "glitch". I would think the vehicle should go into "P" or automatically set the "E Brake". We may have selected "N" by accident, and turned the vehicle off, but ,there were no warning bells or safety mechanisms in place i.e. auto "P" or auto "E-brake"...definitely something all X5 owners should caution if this is the case.

Yes it's been discussed here ...it's the electro to mechanical shift of the brake... nothing that can be done...
