I'm wondering if I can replace just the front two with another brand (Michelin) and replace the rear tires later. I know BMW recommends replacing all four at once, but is this really necessary? The rears have lots of tread left.

Should be fine as long as you do it "in pairs". Keep in mind that if yours is a lease, you will need to return the lease with all four tires of a same brand.

Is is ok to replace just the front with non-runflats while leaving the rear runflats in place, and then eventually replacing the rears too? It is not a lease car.

I would expect that the significant difference in sidewall stiffness would screw-up the handling, but there's only one way to find out...

i have had now 2 different tires with nails and had them replaced under

the insurance protection i purchased when i bought the X. best move i ever made.. both passenger side tires went.. one at 12k(front) and the other at 19k(rear)... i will probably need to buy a new front in next 2k miles.. back looks good for now...
