However, BMW does not recommend idling the engine for prolonged periods of time. Even when the outside temp falls below 0°C, I would just idle 30-40s (about the time it takes for idle to stablise, as JCL mentioned) and then drive off. You're not really warming anything up by sitting there because the transmission and other drivetrain fluids aren't warmed by idling.

Plus, the newer BMWs all have electric coolant pumps so warm up is significantly faster than in most other cars. On the highway, just keep a "moderate" speed of about 100km/h and revs under 3k for a short distance before resuming normal speeds.

If you're really interested in seeing your coolant temperature, go into the diagnostic menu of the Board Computer, where it will display the actual coolant temp.

• hold the reset button before inserting the key.
• Once you insert the key, you will see something like 0.__. Keep pushing until 19.__
• It will display Lock On. Code: Your code is the sum of the last 5 VIN #. Keep pushing the reset until you get the sum (for instance, 22)
• This should unlock the diagnostic mode. Push until menu 7.__. Wait a couple seconds and it should show 7.0 which is the coolant temp.

thanks for this I will give it a try but us there no easier way to see the coolant temp.

Second, people comment about the need to warm an engine in extremely cold weather. Again, there is truth in this point.

However, in all but the coldest weather, 30 seconds of idling will normally warm the engine block and circulate the oil sufficiently. In cases of severe winter cold, as many northerners know, an engine block heater is by far the safest and most economical way to heat a very cold engine

I could not find an article but I was once told that excessive idling will prematurely wear the catalytic converter.

most remote if not all shut off after so many minutes 10 ish.
i still cant believe i paid $62k for a x5 i cant start from in my house.
nothing more embarassing than having the windows frozen. you drive to the dunkin donuts for coffee and have to open the door cus the window wont go down.

X5s are equipped with newer version of immobilizer system, so in order for remote starter to work you will have to hide spare key somewhere near receiver or find immobilizer by-pass which is additional to the remote starter. I haven't seen immobilizer by-pass for 2007+ BMWs.
In addition, most aftermarket shops will not install remote starters on newer BMWs, Mercedes, Audi’s and other high-end European cars due to possible complications and conflicts with electrical system.
