Actually the wood trim is very hard to replace because of all the glue involved--it gets very messy and might not even look right after. Better off just sucking it up and ask the dealer to compensate somehow for it.

The X5 uses glue? Wow. All the other BMWs I know have the trim held in place by clips and pins. I have yet to come across a part that uses glue aside from the headlamp assembly.

I don't think there is any glue involved:

They must have changed it from the e53 because I wanted the Dark Wood and it came with the Light (I didn't order it--it was new dealer stock that had just come in and had all the options I wanted except the wood color). They said the wood replacement would be a pain with the glue/adhesive involved.

Sorry, but I think they fibbed a little bit, to dissuade you from insisting on a change in wood color...

Haha I was duped !!

I actually ended up liking the Light Poplar since I have Jet Black black exterior and black interior--it's a nice contrast. When I get an e70 I will probably roll the same colors unless something else jumps out at me. I like the Saddle Brown with Bamboo since it's only the seats that are Saddle and the rest is black.

Well, to be fair, my understanding is that there is quite a bit of labor involved, and there's always that chance of an expensive slip with a screwdriver, wrench, or other implement. So I can understand their reluctance.

You're certainly right. There is a good deal of labour involved in replacing the trim. The center console alone, BMW charges 4 hours labour. For the doors, the entire planel has to come off, for the trim to be replaced. Only the dash board is "relatively easy".

The trim itself is very pricey. A set can run you in at around $1200 bucks.

Yeah, in your situation that's the exact response I would expect the dealer to give...
