Extended Warranty and maintenance - to do or not do?

I am getting ready to pick up my X5 35d on Friday and was debating whether to purchase the extended warranty and maintenance. My dealers is giving me a quote of $4000 for warranty and $2300 for maintenance. I think this is higher that was I have seen on the forum posts.

What have you done. Have you gone for these extended programs and if so why? What was the price you were able to negotiate?
