My e90 335i has the rear pad wears out first, my E46 M3 also has the rear pad wears out first, and I just change out the brake pads on my E70, the rear's pads also wear out more than the front. I can't say about autocrossing, but for normal city driving, it seems like the rear pads worn out faster

Your two 3 series likely exercised the traction control. That is what wears out rear pads, not driving.

Does it really matter? As long as I'm not replacing pads yearly, I don't care. And until the warranty runs out I really don't care.

It doesn't really matter if we are not changing too often as you say but also if this is normal - but we wont find out until more people have done more miles and started to change out their pads.

What i'm trying to find out is if it is indeed ''normal''.

If not then we could be looking at any number of different things - ie traction control thresholds, DSC/ABS / XDrive abnormalities , sticking brake pads, warped/damaged pads or rotors etc etc.....

Famous last words. I have never had a pair of rear pads wear out first. Period.

My X5 also says that the rears will wear out first. I doubt it. It's an educated guess based on driving style, blah, blah. Only as good as the algorithm written by the programmer.

Look through the rim and keep an eye on them. If you need to pull a wheel ever now and then. That's what I do. I have never replaced a wear sensor nor have I relied on one to tell me when my brakes are worn.

Im not familiar with BMWs.... but in my other cars, there is an indication on the dash cluster that stability management, traction control turns on.... is it the same with BMW? If traction control intervenes that much, you should be able to see it.

if the BMW system is anything like the C5 era Z06 system then it is on all the time. for lack of a better term the rear brakes "flutter" whenever you take a turn.

with X Drive i wonder if the tranfer case shifting power rear to front and vice versa is not contributing to the rear brakes being applied?

It is monitoring all the time, but when it intervenes and applies the brakes you get a light on the dash saying so. IIRC it is a yellow triangle, usually flashing when you accelerate too quickly out of a wet corner, or in snow.

Took the X to the dealership for an oil change. My brake wear when I drove into the dealership:
Front: 60,000KM
Rear: 27,000KM
From my previous reply in this thread, it had been at 60,000KM since 2007 when I got the car.
Driving out I noticed these new readings:
Front:12,000KM
Rear: 27,000KM
Left a voice message with the advisor to find out if anything specific was done to make this huge jump...
